Part Worn Part Safe

Tyres are your vehicle’s primary safety feature. Choosing part worns is a safety risk and false economy. A TyreSafe survey found:

  • 98% of part worn tyres were being sold illegally
  • 34% being offered for sale had dangerous, potentially life-threatening, defects.

Whilst we know that tyres are often a distress purchase, your car is often your second biggest purchase after your house and your tyres are the only thing between your car and the road and even more significantly ‘your family’ and the dangers of the road. Is the cost you’ll save by buying a part-worn tyre really worth the compromise on safety?

Part worn tyre's may seem cheap but could cost you more in the long-run. Part worn tyre's have substantially less tread than a new tyre, so you’ll need to replace it much more quickly - potentially very quickly.

  • Minimum legal requirement of tread left on a part worn : 2mm
  • Minimum legal tread for a car or van tyre on Britain’s roads : 1.6mm
  • Difference - 0.4mm - half the thickness of a credit card
  • A new tyre’s tread depth : 7mm to 8mm

If you think buying part worn is cheaper than buying new, think again, as it’s certainly not usually the case.

Why? Part worn tyre's have been used, so they have less tread left on the tyre, which means although the price you pay may be lower, you’ll need to replace it much more quickly.

If you are lucky and find a part worn tyre which has passed all the checks - how much tread is left? A tyre’s tread determines how well a car brakes and steers, especially in the wet. Low tread means it takes you longer to stop and you have less grip around corners.

Why risk it? Buy new and you know it’s a safe purchase.
